Ep.49 - OUR NHS, Racism In Universities & Tiny Desk
On Ep.49 of "What's Good?" - Our NHS is in jeopardy, (what else is new.) Netflix has pissed off filmmakers, Universities aren't facing racism & why is NPR's "Tiny Desk Concerts" so good?!
In a week where:
- Chuck D is receiving the 2019 Woody Guthrie Prize
- The US eliminate ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
- EU gives the UK a three-month extension to Exit...
- Google & The British Cultural Archives have collaborated to celebrate UK BHM.
- A scientific study claims that the ancestral home of homosapiens is Botswana.
- RIP John Witherspoon.
In a Life/TV hybrid: (7:27) Channel 4 Dispatches uncovers that our current government is holding meetings with US Pharmaceutical companies about the future of our NHS. Let me repeat. Our government, in preparation to leave the EU and form a trade deal with the US, are holding talks with US Pharmaceutical companies, behind closed doors.
In Film/TV: (23:56) Netflix has been experimenting with giving Android phone users the ability to watch their shows/films at 1.5x speed. This has rubbed filmmakers the wrong way to the point of boycotting Netflix. I have a feeling that'll be a short-lived experiment.
In Life: (34:50) Professor Kehinde Andrews is back on WG with an enlightening piece on the true racially systemic nature that Universities in the UK have.
Finally, in Music: (49:22) NPR's "Tiny Desk Concerts" is becoming a must-attend spot for artists promoting their work. But how did it come about? And why is it so good?
Thank you for listening! If you want to contribute to the show, whether it be sending me questions or voicing your opinion in any way, peep the contact links below and I'll respond accordingly. Let me know "What's Good?"
