Ep.129 - Drill, Tank Man & Sitting In Limbo
On Ep.129 of WG: A brief history of Drill, America's gun obsession & its connection to race, the story behind the "Tank Man" photo and Anthony Bryan's thoughts after a BBC drama based on his story wins a BAFTA.
In a week where:
- Floyd Mayweather robbed you lot again.
- United Airlines is running back supersonic flight.
- In the Sarah Everard case, PC Wayne Couzens pleads guilty to kidnap and rape.
- The TV BAFTA Awards happened.
- An Italian Artist Auctioned Off an ‘Invisible Sculpture’ for $18,300.
In Music: (5:45) Drill music has taken a meteoric rise since its beginnings early last decade. But as it became a global phenomenon, it began to evolve exponentially.
In the first of two Life segments: (26:19) America's obsession with guns is fascinating as much as it is depressing. But getting past how Americans refuse to do the simple things, America's attachment to guns, like a lot of things with America, ties back to slavery.
In the 2nd Life segment: (37:29) The anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre came & went this past week. Which gave way to me seeing the classic "Tank Man" photo. So, in wondering what happened to him, I found a story that gave me the entire oral history of the photo itself.
Lastly, in Film/TV: (47:24) Anthony Bryan, one of many survivors of the Windrush Scandal, was the case study for the outstanding one-off film "Sitting In Limbo" that recently won a TV BAFTA. But when he could be jubilant about the win, the Home Office continue to disrespect him.
