Ep.88 - Anti-Semitism, Talib Kweli & Cratedigging
On Ep.88 of WG: African Americans & anti-semitism, Talib Kweli's Twitter cesspool, the NBA's appreciated, but toothless jersey naming scheme and a story about the wonders of crate-digging.
In a week where:
- Civil Rights heroes Congressman John Lewis & CT Vivian, died aged 80 & 95 respectively.
- Boris Johnson is aroused by fox hunting.
- UK government is suspending the Hong-Kong Extradition Treaty.
- Oxford Coronavirus vaccine passes initial tests.
- The main contractor on the Grenfell Tower refurbishment secretly “pocketed” £126,000 while switching the cladding to cheaper, more combustible materials.
In Life: (7:51) In the past few weeks, there have been a few African Americans of note that have expressed views that could be seen as anti-semitic. As someone that isn't completely educated on it all, I decided to read someone that is both black and Jewish.
(For a great explainer I consumed after recording, hit up Vox' The Weeds episode on Anti-Semitism here)
In the first of two Music segments: (30:34) Talib Kweli is a notorious Twitter user. He's consistently on it, usually beating down far-right tweeters and general dumbasses. But for the past two weeks, he's been going at one woman, originally defending his marriage & flagging colourism. But after two weeks, what could've been a genuine case study about colourism & character assassination, is now a cesspool of shit-flinging from both sides.
In Sports: (42:05) The NBA has authorised a particular set of phrases that players can use to express their views towards social justice. But because the selection is decided by the league, is it really anything of worth? Or is it performative?
Lastly, in the 2nd Music segment: (52:26) A fun story about crate-digging and why it is such a staple of Hip-Hop culture. (Or... Used to be anyways...)
